What is a drone?
DSC_0471When you hear the word drone, you might think of the military unmanned aircraft like the Predator drone.  Most drones are far less nefarious.  Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are simply aircraft that are controlled either autonomously by on-board computers or by remote control.  They come in many shapes and sizes, from a simple toy the size of a fist to aircraft as large as a city bus.

Why would I want to use a drone?
Drones have a wide variety of possible uses ranging from the casual hobbyist taking aerial pictures of a volleyball game to the Hollywood director filming a vast panoramic view from 400 feet in the air.  City, state, and federal governments also have uses for drones; they might include surveying damage from fires or searching for a missing person using an infrared camera.  Drones have applications in agriculture too.  Farmers will be using drones to remotely spray their crops with fertilizer.  Cattle ranchers are inspecting their fences using a predetermined flight path.  The world of UAVs has just opened, which means the possible uses are limited only by imagination.
